About us: We both work for the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust. Kevin is 33 and I am 24. We love going for walks, road trips and helping other people. We love to laugh and have a real good time.
How we met: We met while volunteering for St John Ambulance. Kevin had been there for a few years and I joined after wanting to do something useful. It took six months for us to become a couple though.
The proposal: It was amazing. We were on holiday in Tenerife. After lunch we went for a lovely walk along the beach. Kevin ushered me under some rather tropical looking flowers with a gorgeous view over the ocean and got down on one knee. Lots of passers by stopped to look. As he opened the ring box the ring fell out. It was all slow motion as I saw the ring falling to the ground and reached forward to catch it. I’ve never seen such a look of relief on Kev’s face. And, of course, I said yes. He had also managed to get the ring to Tenerife in our hand luggage without me finding it.
The planning: It was great. Everything went fairly smoothly and we had pretty much everything sorted well in advance. We looking around at a few places before we fell in love with Hintlesham Hall. I changed my choice of bouquet three times. But really it went fantastically smoothly and Kev had a major input too, which I loved. We also got our favours and bridesmaid dresses in America.
The dress: My dress was beautiful. I still wish I could wear it all the time. It was ivory with straps and a low V cut front and back. it had a gorgeous lace overlay with tiny pearls and beads so it sparkled in the light. My mum bought it for me from Tinkerbelle in Ipswich. I knew it was the one as soon as I put it on.
The groom’s outfit: This was from Coe’s with a turquoise ruche from Moss. he had a lovely silver/grey suit with tails and, to my surprise and delight, he had ordered a top hat for himself for the day. He also had a silver-patterened waistcoat which helped him stand out from his groomsmen. He looked so handsome.
The flowers: I had a bouquet of white calla lillies and gerberas with bear grass, pearls and turquoise feathers. I hadn’t been able to see it until the day of the wedding and when the bouquet was handed to me I crued. it was beautiful – better than I could have imagined. Helen, from Cavendish Flowers, knew exactly what I wanted. My two bridesmaids had smaller bouquets of calla lillies.
The ceremony: This started with me walking down the aisle with my proud dad to a bagpiper piping Greensleeves. It was amazing. Kevin and I chose to say extra words to each other during the ceremony as we’d been through a tough year. It meant so much to us both and also my mum read a lovely reading which started our married life perfectly. Kevin’s mum and dad were his witnesses and I had my dad and my big sister.
The rings: My wedding ring matches, rather nicely, my engagement ring. I have an 18 carat white gold band with 3/4 carat of diamonds. Kevin’s ring is also 18 carat white gold with a smattering of tiny diamonds.
The reception: This was the best party I’ve ever been to. Blackjacks Discos allowed us to create our own playlist so we could ahve any songs we wanted. It was brilliant. I danced the night away. One of the best memories I ahve of the reception is head-banging to a Metallica song! Also, my bridesmaid’s husband singing Hey Jude! We had two massive wine glasses out filled with sweets – this went down a traet. Kevin and mine’s first dance was to Michael Buble, it was brillaint – so relaxed and basically perfect.
The catering: Hintlesham Hall did all the catering for us. The wedding breakfast has to be the best tasting meal I’ve ever had.
The cake: This was made by my bridesmaid for us. We had two chocolate tiers and one lemon sponge. It was square, had white icing with tiny black and white flowers down the side. There was also a square vase between the top two tiers that contained a mixture of turquoise, black and ivory Jelly Belly’s which were the same sweets as our favours and matched our colour scheme.
The photography: Kevin McEvoy was brilliant. We couldn’t have asked for a better photographer. He was so laid back, easy going and did not insist on clinical pictures or keep ‘snapping away’ in people’s faces. He listened to what we wanted and did just that. The photo’s are just amazing. I can’t stop looking at them. They tell the perfect story of our day.
Most memorable moment: Kevin had wanted to keep the honeymoon a secret from me. I wasn’t allowed to find out until the day. His speech has gone down at Hintlesham as one of the best groom’s speeches ever. He’d booked and paid for everything then made little packages for me for each part of the honeymoon. He’d also bought me little presents to open during the speech which were clues to where we were going.
I got Minnie and Mickey mouse pyjamas as well as Minnie Mouse hairbands so I knew we were going to Disney but it was Disney World in Florida and we were staying in a five star hotel for 12 nights.
I then got another present, which was a children’s toy boat for the bath – a cruise! My dream! After the 12 nights in Florida we were then off on a seven night Caribbean cruise.
The second most memorable moment was the babpipes. Roy Sloane was a brillaint piper. They were a tribute to my Irish background. We had a traditional Irish song, Wearing of the Green, piping us out of the ceremony.
The honeymoon: We visited all the Disney parks, meeting Minnie and Mickey and going to see Shamu at Seaworld. We also did a Florida Day where we went on an airboat ride on rivers where alligators live.
We then had a seven night cruise on a Royal Caribbean ship Freedom of the Seas. We had a private balcony and were lucky enough to be able to watch the ship dock at each of our stops – Haiti, Jamaica, Grand Caymen and Mexico. It was the best three weeks of my life. I can’t thank my husband enough for treating me so well.
Plans for the future: To enjoy our married life for a little while and then hopefully start a family. Kevin is nearing the end of his paramedic training and I’m trying to get back into work after having 15 months off for a back injury.
