Antique jewellery is on trend
Today’s brides are looking for unique, elegant bridal jewellery, handmade to complement their wedding gown, while at the same time being wearable enough to for future special occasions.
“Every bride wants to look her most stunning on the day and accessories such as earrings and a necklace will play a key part in the overall effect,” explains Christopher Hardman, owner of Berridges Jewellers in Dial Lane, Ipswich. “These pieces might also become family heirlooms if you invest in quality products.”
Christopher, an expert in antique jeweller, says many brides opt for a piece of antique jewellery to adhere to the ‘something old’ tradition.
“There has been a massive resurgence of interest in antique jewellery in recent years, unsurprising when you consider that top quality vintage items, with their old, natural gemstones, charm and often superior craftsmanship, have become even rarer to find in good condition.”
Today Christopher and his team at Berridges are lucky to have a network of ‘runners and barkers’ who travel around the markets and auction rooms buying on their behalf and briefing them as to what’s hot and what’s not in the world of antique jewellery.
It’s a far cry from the days when Christopher would be up heading off to places like Bermondsey Market at the most unsociable of hours.
The company also offers a bespoke design and restoration service in conjunction with the exclusive John Ramsay Jewellers in Tunbridge Wells, specialists in re-making and commissioning high quality jewellery for independent jewellers.
“Jewellery will last a lifetime, and is something that can be passed on through the generations,” says Christopher, “so why not spend time creating a piece that is unique to you, rather than just choosing off the shelf?”
Whether you want a treasured family gemstone remodelled and reset, your grandmother’s antique brooch restored to its former glory or even want the team to replicate a much-admired item of haute couture jewellery from scratch, the work will be carried out with the utmost care and attention to detail.
“We have had no end of different requests,’ says Christopher. “Often people will want a piece of family jewellery they have never worn re-worked into something more wearable.
“Even more satisfying is seeing the customer’s response to the work when they come to collect their jewellery. It’s a great part of the job.”
Berridges also stocks classic jewellery collections such as delicate pendants, diamond studs and lustrous pearls, and has a large range of collections, such as Thomas Sabo suitable for bridesmaid or mother of the bride gifts.
