THE winners of Archant’s 2010 Tourism in Suffolk awards were announced at a gala event at Trinity Park in Ipswich.

Among the winners were the Salthouse Harbour Hotel, Ipswich, which won the best large hotel category and Africa Alive, which picked up the award for the best large attraction.

Best tourism experience went to Go Ape at Thetford, while Bury St Edmunds Christmas Fayre won the award for the best event or festival.

The awards are run by Archant Suffolk, publishers of the East Anglian Daily Times, Evening Star and Suffolk magazine, with Choose Suffolk as the main sponsor and are designed to celebrate businesses and individuals who fly the flag for Suffolk and make an outstanding contribution to the success of the county’s tourism industry.

The winners were chosen by category sponsors BBC Suffolk, Cipher Crystal, Lloyds TSB, Paddy & Scotts Coffee, Makro, Spring Advertising, Ballams Accountants, Lowestoft College and Greene King as well as Choose Suffolk, the East Anglian Daily Times and a range of respected independent judges.

All the category winners will be put through to the regional tourism awards, organised and judged by East of England Tourism and those that are successful at this stage will find themselves competing at a national level.

Last night Choose Suffolk’s Tourism Manager Alex Paul announced the most recent official figures, revealing that tourism in Suffolk is now worth £1.75bn to the county’s economy – an increase of 7.4%.

“The county is gaining an enviable reputation for its high-quality accommodation and attractions, which combine to make Suffolk one of the UK’s premier tourism destinations,” said Mr Paul.
