Not-for-profit Business of the Year

sponsored by School for Social Entrepreneurs Suffolk  School for Social Entrepreneurs Suffolk Logo

The School for Social Entrepreneurs Suffolk (SSES) supports pioneering individuals in developing their creative and entrepreneurial skills to deliver solutions to a range of social issues.  It is based in the Eastern Enterprise Hub, James Hehir Building; a dynamic space in the heart of Suffolk bringing together business leaders and budding entrepreneurs.

Our course is a year-long personal and professional learning process, very different from traditional academic courses; there are no lectures or textbooks.  Each programme is flexible and tailored to the needs of the particular group.

The course is made up of:

  • Witness sessions: listen to, question and network with social entrepreneurs – people who have been there and done it.
  • Express sessions: improve your knowledge in areas such as business planning, marketing, legal structures, funding and financial management
  • Action Learning Sets: a small, facilitated group that meet regularly to help to find effective ways of overcoming real life project challenges and issues.
  • Project visits: a chance to investigate a range of established projects and organisations that have made the same journey social entrepreneurs are now on.
  • Personal tutors: helping you embed and apply the learning and work through project or personal challenges that may arise.

You can learn more about our course, sign up for our newsletter and read about our 20 superstar students at www.sse.org.uk/suffolk .

The not-for-profit category is always hotly contested as the benefits from winning awards are clear to the organisation, offering increased fundraising potential and profile. However there are also organisations which although not reliant on a charitable income also deliver services effectively, within budget and without making a profit and we would like to encourage more of these organisations such as schools to consider entering the category.

Please provide us with details of the following information, ideally in separate, headed paragraphs:

  • Your organisations objectives and how these are communicated to stakeholders and potential donors / funding bodies.
  • Your flair and originality in generating income or securing funding.
  • Your efficient use of resources, with a clear demonstration of added value/social accounting.
  • Innovation in services or products to meet changing demands
  • A commitment to people development, whether paid or volunteer, including qualified governance.
  • How many people are involved in running the organisation and how many of these are paid postions?
  • Give one example of an outstanding / exciting fundraising idea that you have used and tell us how successful it was.
